The scholarly reading

Jesus commends her 'because of this answer' (dia touton ton logon) and declares the demon has already left her daughter — a distance healing performed without touch, physical presence, or elaborate ritual, solely through the power of his word and in response to Gentile faith.

Language and setting

This is one of only two distance healings in the Synoptics (cf. Matt 8:5-13, centurion's servant). The healing on the basis of her 'word' (logos) mirrors Jesus' own power exercised through speech. Gentile faith accomplishes what Nazareth's unbelief could not (6:5-6).

Jesus responds to the woman's faith with the declaration that her daughter is healed.

Significance

Moved by the woman's extraordinary reply, Jesus declares the demon gone — a long-distance healing requiring neither touch nor ritual. Gentile faith has drawn forth divine power.

27“First let the children have their fill,” He said. “For it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29Then Jesus told her, “Because of this answer, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.”

30And she went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.
