Rejected and Relentless

Jesus could see the disciples struggling hard against the wind. Around 3 AM, he came out to them, walking on the water. He was going to walk right past them.
He saw them struggling. He came to them. That's the core of this story: Jesus sees your struggle, and he comes to you in the middle of it — in ways you never expect.
Mark describes Jesus walking on the water toward his struggling disciples.
In the darkest hour of the night, Jesus walks across the waves toward his struggling friends. He doesn't fly or appear suddenly — he walks, calmly and deliberately, through the very thing they fear.
Jesus sees (idon) the disciples straining at rowing (basanizomenous — literally 'being tortured') against a headwind. At the 'fourth watch' (3-6 AM), he comes walking on the sea (peripatōn epi tēs thalassēs) — language echoing Job 9:8 where God alone 'treads on the waves of the sea.' The phrase 'intended to pass by' (ethelen parelthein) recalls OT theophanies where God 'passes by' (Exod 33:19-22; 1 Kings 19:11).
Walking on the sea in the OT is exclusively a divine prerogative (Job 9:8; Ps 77:19; Isa 43:16). The 'passing by' motif indicates a theophany — God revealing his glory — not indifference.
Mark narrates Jesus' observation of the disciples and his approach across the water.
From the mountain, Jesus sees his disciples tormented by the storm. In the predawn darkness, he walks to them on the sea — a divine act revealing his identity as the one who rules the waters.
46After bidding them farewell, He went up on the mountain to pray.
47When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and Jesus was alone on land.
