The scholarly reading

Jesus asks them to inventory their resources: 'Go and see how many loaves you have.' The result — five loaves and two fish — is laughably inadequate for five thousand, yet it is precisely with this meager offering that Jesus will work.

Language and setting

The five loaves were likely barley flatbreads (cf. John 6:9), the staple bread of the poor. Two fish were probably small dried or pickled fish used as relish. The inventory forces the disciples to confront the gap between need and resource.

Significance

Jesus reduces the problem to a simple question: what do you have? The answer — five loaves and two fish — seems absurd against the need. But in Jesus' hands, inadequacy becomes abundance.
