Why it's here

This is one of the rare times Jesus tells someone to go and tell. Usually he says 'don't tell anyone.' But here, in Gentile territory, the man's testimony is exactly what's needed.

Jesus speaks to the healed man with a specific purpose and calling.

Jesus doesn't let the man come with him, but he gives him something even better: a purpose. Your own story of what God has done — that's the most powerful testimony you have.

The scholarly reading

Jesus refuses (ouk apheken) the man's request and instead commissions him as a missionary to his own people (oikon), telling him to proclaim 'how much the Lord (kyrios) has done' — a title that, in this Gentile context, bridges Jewish and pagan understandings of divine power.

Language and setting

Unlike the typical 'messianic secret' commands to silence, Jesus here commands proclamation — in Gentile territory where misunderstanding of a political messiah is less likely. 'Mercy' (eleesen) echoes Psalm 103:8.

Voice

Jesus speaks directly to the healed man, denying his request but giving him a mission.

Significance

Jesus redirects the man's devotion into mission: go home and tell your people what God has done for you. The man becomes the first commissioned evangelist to the Gentile world.

17And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.

18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.

19But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”

20So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.

21When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.
