Looking at those seated in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! Mark 3:34 · Berean Standard Bible
He looked at the people sitting around Him and said, 'Look—here are My mother and My brothers!'
He looked at the ordinary people sitting around Him and called them family. If you follow Jesus, you belong to Him in the deepest possible way.
Jesus gestures to the people gathered around Him and declares them His true family.
He pointed at fishermen, tax collectors, and everyday people, and said: 'These are my people. This is my family.' If you're following Jesus, you're not just a fan or a follower—you're family.
Looking at those seated in a circle (kyklō) around Him, Jesus declared, 'Here (ide) are My mother and My brothers!'—identifying His true family as those gathered in discipleship.
The circle of disciples becomes the visible representation of Jesus' new family. The demonstrative 'Here!' (ide) physically points to the gathered community as the locus of true kinship with Jesus.
Jesus answers His own question by gesturing to the circle of disciples and declaring them His family.
With a sweep of His arm, Jesus redefined the most fundamental human institution. The community of faith—those who sat at His feet and listened to His word—constituted His primary family.
32and a crowd was sitting around Him. “Look,” He was told, “Your mother and brothers are outside, asking for You.”
33But Jesus replied, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”
34Looking at those seated in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
35For whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.”
