Jesus' family (hoi par' autou, 'those beside Him' or 'His own people') came to seize Him (kratēsai), saying 'He is out of His mind' (exestē)—an accusation of insanity.

Language and setting

The family's attempt to take custody of Jesus (kratēsai has the force of 'arrest') reveals that even His closest relatives did not yet understand His mission. This is one of Mark's most psychologically raw passages.

Significance
