On a Sabbath, Jesus passed through grain fields (sporima), and His disciples began plucking (tillein) heads of grain, which was permitted by Deuteronomy 23:25 but disputed regarding Sabbath observance.

Language and setting

Pharisaic tradition classified plucking grain as 'reaping,' one of the 39 categories of work (melakhot) prohibited on the Sabbath (Mishnah Shabbat 7:2). The dispute was not about theft but about Sabbath labor.

21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.

25Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?
