The scholarly reading

Jesus answered with a wedding metaphor: wedding guests (huioi tou numphōnos, 'sons of the bridal chamber') cannot mourn while the bridegroom (nymphios) is present with them.

Language and setting

The bridegroom imagery echoes Old Testament metaphors for God's relationship with Israel (Hosea 2:16-20, Isaiah 62:5). By identifying Himself as the bridegroom, Jesus made an implicit divine claim.

Significance

20But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

21No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, and a worse tear will result.
