The scholarly reading

Jesus commanded the paralytic with three imperatives: 'Rise' (egeire), 'Take up your mat' (aron ton krabatton sou), and 'Go home' (hypage eis ton oikon sou)—a complete restoration to independent mobility and domestic life.

Language and setting

The command to carry his mat was particularly significant: the object that had carried him would now be carried by him, a dramatic symbol of total reversal.

Significance

The three commands moved from the immediate (rise), to the demonstrative (carry your mat), to the restorative (go home). Jesus restored not just physical ability but the man's capacity to return to normal life.

9“Which is easier: to say to a paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?

10But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic,

11“I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”

12And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of them all. As a result, they were all astounded and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

13Once again Jesus went out beside the sea. All the people came to Him, and He taught them there.
