The scholarly reading

In the longer ending, the risen Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene, identified as the one from whom He had cast out hepta daimonia (seven demons).

Language and setting

Mark 16:9-20 is the 'Longer Ending,' absent from the earliest manuscripts (Sinaiticus, Vaticanus). Most scholars consider it a second-century addition that summarizes resurrection appearances from other Gospels.

Significance
