The scholarly reading

Simon of Cyrene, identified as the father of Alexander and Rufus, is aggareuousin (pressed into service) to carry Jesus' stauros (cross/crossbeam).

Language and setting

Angareuo is a technical term for Roman forced labor. Mark's naming of Alexander and Rufus suggests they became known Christians (cf. Romans 16:13). Cyrene was in modern Libya, indicating Simon was a diaspora Jew.

The narrator introduces Simon and describes his conscription.

Significance

A pilgrim from North Africa is forcibly enlisted to carry the crossbeam. This chance encounter transforms Simon's life; his sons become known members of the early church.
