The Crucifixion
Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. Mark 15:1 · Berean Standard Bible
First thing in the morning, the religious leaders make their plan official, tie Jesus up, and hand Him over to the Roman governor Pilate.
The Jewish leaders couldn't execute anyone on their own; they needed Roman permission. So they deliver Jesus to Pilate to get the death sentence carried out.
Mark describes the handoff from religious to political authority.
A new day dawns, but the injustice continues. They rush Jesus to Pilate before the public can rally to His defense.
At dawn, the full Sanhedrin formalizes their decision in a symboullion (consultation/plan) and delivers Jesus bound to Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect.
This morning session may have been an attempt to legitimize the illegal nighttime proceedings. Roman authority was required for capital punishment in Judea (ius gladii).
The narrator describes the transition from Jewish to Roman jurisdiction.
