Betrayal Begins

Immediately the rooster crows a second time, and Peter suddenly remembers Jesus telling him, 'Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.' And he breaks down crying.
This is rock bottom for Peter, but it's also where his journey back begins. His tears show that despite his failure, his love for Jesus is real.
Mark describes Peter's heartbreaking moment of realization.
That second rooster crow hits Peter like a thunderbolt. Jesus' words come flooding back, and he realizes exactly what he's done. His tears are the sound of a heart breaking.
The rooster crows a second time, triggering Peter's anamnesis (remembrance) of Jesus' prophecy. Peter epibalon (broke down/threw himself down) and wept bitterly.
The word epibalon is notoriously difficult to translate; options include 'having rushed out,' 'having thrown a garment over his head,' or 'breaking down.' The double rooster crow is unique to Mark's account.
The narrator describes Peter's devastating moment of realization and collapse.
The second rooster crow shatters Peter's denial. Jesus' words flash through his mind, and the enormity of what he's done breaks him. His weeping marks the beginning of eventual restoration.
