Betrayal Begins
“I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” Mark 14:62 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus answers plainly: 'I am.' Then He tells them they will see Him seated in the place of ultimate power and coming on the clouds of heaven.
This is the moment. Jesus doesn't dodge or deflect. He claims to be God's chosen King and says they will one day see Him vindicated as judge of all.
Jesus answers the high priest directly and boldly.
After all the silence, Jesus speaks and it's the most powerful statement anyone has ever made. He tells His judges that one day He will be their judge.
Jesus responds with the emphatic ego eimi ('I am'), then combines Daniel 7:13 (Son of Man coming with clouds) and Psalm 110:1 (sitting at the right hand) into a declaration of divine authority and eschatological vindication.
Ego eimi may echo the divine name from Exodus 3:14. By combining two messianic texts, Jesus claims both present enthronement and future cosmic judgment, leaving no ambiguity about His self-understanding.
Jesus makes His climactic self-declaration to the high priest and Sanhedrin.
In the most significant moment of the trial, Jesus openly claims divine identity and messianic authority, fusing together the two most powerful messianic texts in Jewish Scripture.
60So the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?”
61But Jesus remained silent and made no reply.
62“I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “Why do we need any more witnesses?
64You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?”
