Betrayal Begins
Then the men seized Jesus and arrested Him. Mark 14:46 · Berean Standard Bible
The soldiers grab Jesus and arrest Him right there in the garden.
This is the moment everything changes. Jesus, who could have called down legions of angels, lets them take Him.
Mark describes the arrest simply and directly.
No dramatic fight, no miraculous escape. Jesus lets them seize Him because He knows this is the path to saving everyone.
The armed group seizes Jesus and places Him under arrest, using krateo (to seize with force), indicating a physical apprehension.
Mark's account is characteristically terse here. Unlike John's Gospel, Mark does not mention Jesus' words causing the soldiers to fall back.
The narrator describes the physical arrest of Jesus.
The signal is given and the soldiers move in immediately. Jesus offers no resistance as they lay hands on Him.
44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I kiss is the man; arrest Him and lead Him away securely.”
45Going directly to Jesus, he said, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
46Then the men seized Jesus and arrested Him.
47And one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48Jesus asked the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw?
