What It Means

Mark 14:40, in plain English

Again He came back and found them sleeping — their eyes were too heavy. They didn't even know what to say to Him.

Why it's here

They weren't being rebellious. They were exhausted, overwhelmed, and simply couldn't keep going. Jesus understood — but it didn't make the loneliness any less real.

The scholarly reading

Jesus finds the disciples sleeping again — their 'heavy eyes' (katabarunomenoi hoi ophthalmoi) indicating physical and spiritual exhaustion. Their inability to respond ('did not know what to answer') shows their helplessness.

Language and setting

The triple cycle of prayer and sleeping disciples mirrors Peter's coming triple denial, creating a structural parallel between corporate and individual failure.

Mark narrates Jesus' second return to the sleeping disciples.

Significance

The repetition intensifies the pathos: Jesus faces His greatest crisis utterly alone, as even His closest companions cannot maintain wakefulness to support Him.
