The scholarly reading

Jesus returns to find the three disciples sleeping and addresses Peter specifically by his pre-call name 'Simon' — a pointed reminder of who Peter was before being called 'Rock.'

Language and setting

The shift from 'Peter' to 'Simon' may signal Jesus' acknowledgment that Peter's bold declarations of loyalty (14:29, 31) are already failing at the most basic level.

Jesus addresses the sleeping Peter.

Significance

The disciples' failure to watch for even one hour fulfills the pattern Jesus warned about in the Olivet Discourse (13:36) and foreshadows their abandonment at His arrest.
