Watch and Wait

Jesus told them to pray that it wouldn't happen during winter, when travel would be even more dangerous and difficult.
Winter in Judea meant swollen rivers, muddy roads, and freezing nights. Fleeing under those conditions would be especially brutal.
Jesus asks His disciples to pray for mercy in the timing.
Even the timing matters to Jesus. He's saying: pray about the details. God cares about the circumstances of your hardship, not just the big picture.
The prayer that flight not occur in winter reflects practical concern: winter rains swell the wadis (seasonal riverbeds), making travel through Judean terrain especially dangerous.

20If the Lord had not cut short those days, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has cut them short.
