The disciples were astonished and said to each other, 'Then who can be saved?' If the people everyone assumed were closest to God couldn't make it, what hope was there for anyone?
This is actually the right question, because it leads to the right answer. When you realize you can't save yourself, you're finally ready to be saved by God.
The disciples voice their shock to each other.
Their world was shaking. Everything they believed about who God favors was being turned upside down. And in that moment of total confusion, they were finally ready to hear the real answer.
The disciples' extreme astonishment (perissōs exeplēssonto) and their question 'Who then can be saved?' reveals their assumption that if the wealthy (presumably the most blessed by God) cannot be saved, salvation is impossible for anyone.
Their logic follows: if wealth = God's favor, and the wealthy can't be saved, then no one can. Jesus is about to redirect their entire theology of salvation.
The disciples express their alarm to one another.
The disciples are undone. Their theological framework — wealth equals divine blessing — has just collapsed. If the 'blessed' wealthy cannot enter the kingdom, who on earth can?
24And the disciples were amazed at His words.
25It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
26They were even more astonished and said to one another, “Who then can be saved?”
27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
28Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.”
