Where it sits in the story

This is one of the saddest moments in the Gospels. The man wanted to follow Jesus. He really did. But his grip on his wealth was stronger than his grip on faith. And so he left.

The scholarly reading

The man's face falls (stygnasas) and he departs grieving (lypoumenos) because he had 'great possessions' (ktēmata polla). This is the only recorded instance in the Gospels where someone explicitly rejects Jesus' invitation to follow.

Language and setting

The word stygnasas ('looking gloomy, shocked') is also used for an overcast sky, suggesting the man's face darkened. His sorrow confirms he understood the cost — and chose his wealth.

Significance

The man's face falls. He knows Jesus is right, and the grief proves it. But he cannot let go of his wealth, and so he walks away — the saddest departure in all the Gospels.

20“Teacher,” he replied, “all these I have kept from my youth.”

21Jesus looked at him, loved him, and said to him, “There is one thing you lack: Go, sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”

22But the man was saddened by these words and went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.

23Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

24And the disciples were amazed at His words.
