As Jesus was setting out, a man ran up to Him and knelt down. 'Good Teacher,' he asked, 'what must I do to inherit eternal life?' The question was sincere, and the urgency was real.

The man's approach combines admirable earnestness with a fundamental misunderstanding: eternal life cannot be 'inherited' through performance; it must be received like a child (v.15).
