A man with leprosy came and fell on his knees before Jesus, pleading, 'If You are willing, You can make me clean.'
This man was an outcast—his disease made him untouchable. He believed Jesus could heal him; he just wasn't sure Jesus would want to. Have you ever felt that way?
A desperate leper approaches Jesus with a request that reveals both deep faith and deep insecurity.
He had faith in Jesus' power but doubted His willingness. So many of us are the same way: we believe God can help, but we're not sure He wants to help us specifically.
A leper approached Jesus, kneeling (gonypetōn) and making a conditional petition: 'If You are willing (ean thelēs), You can (dynasai) make me clean (katharisai)'—affirming Jesus' power while questioning His willingness.
Leprosy (likely encompassing various skin diseases) rendered a person ritually unclean (Leviticus 13-14), resulting in total social and religious exclusion. The man's approach violated purity laws and required desperate courage.
The leper speaks to Jesus, expressing absolute faith in His ability but uncertainty about His willingness.
The leper's faith was remarkable: he had no doubt about Jesus' power. His only question was whether the holy Teacher would be willing to cross the purity boundary to help someone considered untouchable.
38But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.”
39So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
40Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”
42And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man was cleansed.
