But Jesus replied, 'Let's go somewhere else—to the nearby towns—so I can preach there too. That's why I came.'
Instead of staying where He was popular, Jesus moved on to where He was needed. He didn't come to build a fanbase—He came to spread the good news as far as He could.
Jesus redirects the disciples' focus from popularity to purpose.
When everyone wants you to stay, it takes real clarity to move on. Jesus knew His mission wasn't to be Capernaum's celebrity. It was to bring the good news to as many people as possible.
Jesus redirected their enthusiasm, insisting they move on to 'nearby towns' (allachou eis tas echomenas kōmopoleis) to preach there also, declaring 'that is why I have come' (eis touto gar exēlthon).
Jesus defines His mission not as localized miracle-working but as itinerant proclamation. The verb exēlthon ('I came out') may refer to His departure from Capernaum or, more theologically, His coming from the Father.
Jesus speaks, redefining the disciples' expectations by prioritizing preaching over settling into a popular base.
Jesus resisted the temptation of a permanent base of adoring supporters, choosing instead the harder path of spreading the message more widely. His mission was proclamation, not popularity.
36Simon and his companions went to look for Him,
37and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!”
38But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.”
39So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
40Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
