Very early in the morning (prōi ennycha lian), while it was still dark, Jesus withdrew to a solitary place (erēmon topon) to pray (prosēucheto), demonstrating the priority of communion with the Father.

Language and setting

After a night of intensive ministry, Jesus' first priority was prayer, not rest. The 'solitary place' echoes the wilderness motif and shows that Jesus' power flowed from His relationship with the Father.
