The quotation from Isaiah 40:3 (LXX) describes a voice (phōnē) crying in the wilderness, calling people to prepare the Lord's way (tēn hodon kyriou) and make His paths straight (eutheias).

Language and setting

In its original Isaianic context, this referred to God's return to His people after exile. Mark applies it christologically: Jesus is the Lord whose coming demands preparation.

Mark continues the prophetic citation, with Isaiah's words pointing to John the Baptist's role as the wilderness herald.

Significance

The wilderness setting is theologically significant: Israel's defining experiences with God occurred in the wilderness (Exodus, Sinai). John's wilderness ministry signaled a new act of divine salvation.
