The demons knew exactly who Jesus was, even when the people around Him were still figuring it out. Evil recognized the threat immediately.

Where it sits in the story

There's a strange irony here: the first being to publicly declare who Jesus truly was in Mark's Gospel was a demon. The forces of darkness had no doubt about who they were dealing with.

The scholarly reading

The demon addressed Jesus as 'Jesus of Nazareth,' asking 'What do you want with us?' (ti hēmin kai soi), and identified Him as 'the Holy One of God' (ho hagios tou theou)—a messianic title.

Language and setting

In ancient belief, knowing someone's name gave power over them. The demon's attempt to name Jesus ('Holy One of God') may represent an effort to gain control, which Jesus immediately silenced.

Voice

The unclean spirit speaks through the possessed man, demonstrating supernatural knowledge of Jesus' true identity.

Significance

Ironically, the demon provided a more accurate christological confession than any human character in Mark's Gospel would offer until much later. The forces of evil recognized who Jesus was before His own disciples fully understood.

22The people were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

23Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue:

24“What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

25But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”

26At this, the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out with a loud shriek.
