The congregation was astonished (exeplēssonto) at Jesus' teaching because He taught with inherent authority (exousia), unlike the scribes who relied on citing prior rabbinic authorities.

Language and setting

Scribal teaching typically consisted of citing chains of rabbinic tradition ('Rabbi X says in the name of Rabbi Y'). Jesus' direct, authoritative pronouncements—'I say to you'—were unprecedented and unsettling.

23Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue:

24“What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
