God often shows up in the middle of the mundane. James and John weren't in a temple or at a prayer meeting—they were fixing nets. And that's exactly where Jesus found them.

The scholarly reading

Proceeding further along the shore, Jesus encountered James and John, sons of Zebedee, mending (katartizontas) their nets in a boat—indicating a family fishing enterprise.

Language and setting

The verb katartizō ('to mend, restore') suggests the brothers were preparing for the next fishing expedition. Their family business with hired workers (v. 20) indicates relative prosperity.

Mark narrates the second pair of disciples encountered, again by the Sea of Galilee.

Significance

The detail of net-mending shows these were diligent workers in an established business. Jesus' call would require them to leave not just a job but a family enterprise and social network.

17“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

18And at once they left their nets and followed Him.

19Going on a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat, mending their nets.

20Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.

21Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.
