Why it's here

The word 'tore me to pieces' doesn't exaggerate the experience of siege and defeat. People died, families were separated, communities were shattered. And now the survivor describes feeling utterly alone in that wreckage, with no one to help or defend him.

Where it sits in the story

This is the depth of the lament. The person has been cast off by God and abandoned by help. But notice: he's still speaking about it. That testimony matters.

The scholarly reading

God has forcibly diverted the speaker from his intended path and destroyed him utterly, leaving him without any helper or advocate.

Language and setting

The verb שָׁמַם (shamam—desolate/dismay) carries connotations of being rendered utterly helpless; the absence of a helper (עֹזֵר, ozer) represents abandonment in both covenant and kinship terms. In tribal and ancient Near Eastern contexts, lack of an advocate meant functional death.
