Born Blind, Now Seeing
When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man ?” John 9:35 · Berean Standard Bible
When Jesus hears that the man has been thrown out, He goes and finds him. Then He asks, 'Do you believe in the Son of Man?'
This is so tender—the moment everyone else rejects this man, Jesus comes looking for him. He doesn't abandon those who suffer for His sake.
Jesus takes the initiative to find and approach the man who was expelled for defending Him.
The man just lost everything—his community, his place of worship. And then Jesus shows up. The One the man defended now comes to defend and embrace him.
Jesus takes the initiative to find the expelled man (hēuren auton), demonstrating the Good Shepherd motif (cf. 10:3-4), and poses the decisive christological question about belief in the 'Son of Man.'
The title 'Son of Man' (huios tou anthrōpou) carries apocalyptic significance from Daniel 7:13-14, denoting a divine figure of judgment and authority. Jesus seeks the man at his lowest point of social rejection.
Jesus actively seeks out the man who was expelled and asks him the ultimate question of faith.
In a poignant reversal, the man rejected by the religious community is found by Christ Himself. Jesus transforms the man's expulsion into an encounter with the divine.
33If this man were not from God, He could do no such thing.”
34They replied, “You were born in utter sin, and you are instructing us?” And they threw him out.
35When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found the man and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man ?”
36“Who is He, Sir?” he replied. “Tell me so that I may believe in Him.”
37“You have already seen Him,” Jesus answered. “He is the One speaking with you.”
