The scholarly reading

Pressed for his own christological assessment, the healed man advances from calling Jesus 'a man' (v.11) to declaring Him 'prophētēs' (a prophet)—the second stage in his progressive confession.

Language and setting

Identifying Jesus as a prophet was significant but incomplete. In Jewish expectation, prophets were divinely authorized figures. This declaration places the man at odds with the Pharisees who denied Jesus' divine origin.

Significance

In a remarkable reversal, the religious experts ask the formerly blind beggar for theological judgment. His answer—'He is a prophet'—shows his understanding deepening through experience.
