Born Blind, Now Seeing
He answered, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and anointed my eyes, and He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and received my sight.” John 9:11 · Berean Standard Bible
The man tells his story simply: Jesus made mud, put it on my eyes, told me to wash, and now I can see.
Notice that at this point, the man only knows Jesus as 'the man they call Jesus.' His understanding will grow beautifully throughout this chapter.
The healed man shares his experience with the curious crowd around him.
There's a beautiful honesty in his words. He doesn't overthink it or exaggerate. He just tells what happened, and the facts speak for themselves.
The healed man gives his first testimony, a straightforward factual account identifying 'the man called Jesus' (ho anthrōpos ho legomenos Iēsous) as the agent—showing initial but incomplete christological understanding.
His identification of Jesus as merely 'the man' represents the lowest rung of a progressive christological confession that will advance through 'prophet' (v.17), to 'from God' (v.33), to 'Lord' (v.38).
The formerly blind man recounts the events of his healing to his neighbors.
The man faithfully narrates what happened—the mud, the instruction, the washing, the sight—providing a simple but powerful testimony that will be repeated and challenged multiple times.
