The Light of the World

One by one, starting with the oldest, they all walk away. Their own consciences convict them. Finally, only Jesus and the woman are left.
The oldest left first because they had the most to remember. Jesus' words found their mark in every heart.
The Gospel writer describes the powerful scene as the accusers leave one at a time.
Stones intended for the woman fall silently to the ground as her accusers disappear. In the end, the only person who had the right to throw a stone was the only one who chose not to.
Convicted by conscience (hupo tēs suneidēseōs elenchomenoi), the accusers depart one by one (heis kath' heis), beginning with the elders (presbuterōn), until only Jesus and the woman remain, the sinless judge and the sinner.
The detail that the oldest left first suggests that maturity brought greater self-awareness of sin. The scene resolves to its essential elements: the only one qualified to condemn stands alone with the condemned.
The narrator describes the accusers' gradual departure, leaving Jesus alone with the woman.
One by one, stones drop and feet shuffle away. The oldest leave first because they have the longest list of sins. Eventually only two people remain: the only sinless person in the world and a woman caught in sin.
7When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
8And again He bent down and wrote on the ground.
