The crowd grabs stones to kill Jesus for claiming to be God. But He slips away from the temple. They cannot touch Him because His time has not come.
They understood His claim perfectly. He said He was God, and they tried to execute Him for it. But once again, no one can harm Jesus until He allows it.
The Gospel writer describes the dramatic conclusion of this confrontation.
The stones were real, but so was God's protection. Jesus walked out of that temple untouched because the Father's plan required a cross, not a stoning. His hour was coming, but on His terms, not theirs.
The crowd picks up stones (lithous) to throw at Him for perceived blasphemy, but Jesus ekrubē (was hidden/hid Himself) and went out of the temple, escaping through divine means as His hour had not yet come.
The stoning attempt confirms that the audience correctly understood Jesus' I AM claim as an assertion of deity, which they regarded as blasphemy (Leviticus 24:16). His escape suggests supernatural concealment.
The narrator describes the violent response to Jesus' I AM declaration and His miraculous departure from the temple.
The crowd understood exactly what Jesus claimed and responded with the prescribed punishment for blasphemy: death by stoning. But stones cannot touch the I AM until He permits it. He walks out unseen, sovereign even in retreat.
57Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
58“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
59At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.
