Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” John 8:57 · Berean Standard Bible
The crowd scoffs: You are not even fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham? They cannot imagine what Jesus is about to say.
They are stuck in linear time while Jesus is about to reveal that He exists beyond time. The most shocking statement in the Bible is seconds away.
The crowd mocks Jesus with what they think is common sense.
They thought age settled the argument. How could a young man know Abraham? They had no idea they were talking to someone who was there before Abraham was born, before anything was born.
The Jews scoff at the impossibility: Jesus is not yet fifty years old (pentēkonta etē oupō echeis), yet He claims to have seen Abraham, taking His words as a chronological claim rather than a theological one.
The mention of fifty years may be a round number for a full lifespan or may suggest Jesus looked older than His actual age. Their literalism once again misses the deeper christological claim.
The Jewish audience expresses incredulity at Jesus' apparent chronological claim, setting up the climactic I AM declaration.
They are thinking in terms of calendars and lifespans. Jesus is about to reveal that He exists outside of time entirely. Their chronological objection is about to be shattered.
55You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.
56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad.”
57Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
58“Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
59At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple area.
