The Light of the World

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. What It Means

John 8:44, in plain English

Jesus makes the most shocking statement of the conversation: Your father is the devil. He was a murderer from the beginning and the father of lies. Their desire to kill Jesus proves whose children they really are.

The scholarly reading

Jesus delivers the most explosive statement: humeis ek tou patros tou diabolou este (you are of your father the devil), identifying the devil as a murderer (anthrōpoktonos) from the beginning and the father of lies (ho patēr tou pseudous).

Language and setting

The anthrōpoktonos (man-slayer) reference points to the serpent's role in bringing death to humanity through the Fall (Genesis 3). As their murder plot mirrors the devil's character, Jesus names the true source of their inspiration.

Voice

Jesus identifies the devil as the true spiritual father of His opponents, the most severe pronouncement in the entire Gospel.

Significance

Jesus names the unspeakable. Their father is not Abraham, not God, but the devil himself. Their murderous intent and rejection of truth are the family traits of Satan. The diagnosis is devastating but necessary.
