John 8:41, in plain English

The scholarly reading

Jesus states they do the works of their father (ta erga tou patros humōn). They respond with a double claim: they are not born of fornication (ek porneias), and their only Father is God Himself, possibly insinuating illegitimacy about Jesus' birth.

Language and setting

The reference to porneia (fornication/illegitimacy) may be a slur against Jesus' birth or a denial of spiritual infidelity (idolatry was often called harlotry in the Old Testament prophets).

Voice

Jesus presses the point about their true paternity, and the audience responds with an increasingly desperate claim to divine fatherhood.

Significance

The conversation escalates. Jesus keeps pointing to their real father, and they keep insisting it is God. The tension is building toward the most explosive revelation in the exchange.

39“Abraham is our father,” they replied.

42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me.

43Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.
