The crowd bristles: We are Abraham's children! We have never been slaves! They completely miss the point. Their history is full of slavery, and Jesus is talking about an even deeper kind.
It is remarkable that a people whose founding story is the Exodus from slavery would claim to have never been enslaved. They are blind to both their history and their spiritual condition.
The crowd responds defensively to Jesus' offer of freedom.
Sometimes we are most enslaved when we are most convinced we are free. The crowd could not accept Jesus' offer because they could not see their need.
The audience objects by claiming Abrahamic descent (Sperma Abraam esmen) and asserting they have never been slaves (oudeni dedouleukamen pōpote), a historically ironic claim given Israel's history of Egyptian, Babylonian, and Roman subjugation.
The claim to never having been enslaved is astonishing given the Exodus, the Exile, and their current status under Roman occupation. Their blindness to political reality mirrors their blindness to spiritual reality.
The Jewish audience protests Jesus' implication that they need liberation, appealing to their Abrahamic heritage and denying any experience of slavery.
The irony is almost unbearable. A people defined by their exodus from slavery claim to have never been enslaved. They are talking about political history and missing the spiritual bondage Jesus is addressing.
31So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples.
32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33“We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”
34Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35A slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.
