Jesus addresses the believing Jews (tous pepisteukotas autō Ioudaious) with a conditional: if they remain (meinēte) in His word (logō), they are truly (alēthōs) His disciples (mathētai), establishing perseverance as the mark of genuine faith.

Language and setting

The verb menō (remain/abide) is central to Johannine discipleship (cf. 15:1-11). True discipleship is not initial belief but continued abiding in Jesus' teaching, a theme that will be tested immediately.
