Imagine never being alone, always having the Father's presence and approval. That was Jesus' life. And He would give up that closeness on the cross so you could have it instead.

The scholarly reading

Jesus affirms the Father's continual presence: He who sent Me is with Me (met' emou estin). The Father has not left Him alone because Jesus always does (pantote) what pleases (ta aresta) Him, indicating perfect relational harmony.

Language and setting

This statement anticipates the cry of dereliction on the cross (Matthew 27:46), making the Gethsemane experience all the more devastating: the one who always pleased the Father would experience the Father's absence for the first time.

Jesus declares His unbroken communion with the Father, based on His perfect obedience.

Significance

Jesus lives in unbroken fellowship with the Father because He always does what pleases Him. This perfect communion makes the coming rupture on the cross, where He cries out My God, why have you forsaken me, all the more agonizing.
