The Light of the World
Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. John 8:23 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus explains the divide plainly: You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this world; I do not. That is why they cannot understand or follow Him.
This is not Jesus being elitist. He is explaining a spiritual reality that only faith can bridge. Without believing in Him, they remain trapped in the realm below.
Jesus speaks with clarity about the fundamental difference between Himself and His opponents.
There are two realms: above and below, heaven and earth. Jesus came from above to bring you up. But if you refuse to believe, you stay where you are.
Jesus declares a fundamental ontological divide: they are ek tōn katō (from below), He is ek tōn anō (from above); they are ek toutou tou kosmou (of this world), He is not of this world, explaining why they cannot follow.
The spatial metaphor (above/below) conveys an ontological distinction between the divine realm and the fallen human realm. Jesus' origin determines His nature and destiny, just as theirs determines their inability to follow.
Jesus explains the fundamental reason for their inability to comprehend or follow Him: they exist in entirely different realms of origin and identity.
Jesus names the real issue. The gap between them is not geographical but ontological. They belong to the world below; He belongs to the realm above. Without faith, that gap is unbridgeable.
21Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
22So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
23Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
25“Who are You?” they asked.
