The Light of the World
“Where is Your Father?” they asked Him. John 8:19 · Berean Standard Bible
They ask: Where is Your Father? Jesus answers: You do not know Me or My Father. If you truly knew Me, you would know the Father too. They are completely missing the point.
Knowing Jesus and knowing the Father are the same thing. The Pharisees think they know God, but their rejection of Jesus proves they do not.
Jesus answers a mocking question with a truth that cuts to the heart of the matter.
This is one of the clearest statements Jesus makes: if you want to know God, look at Me. If you reject Me, you are rejecting the Father. You cannot have one without the other.
The Pharisees ask Pou estin ho Patēr sou (Where is Your Father?), revealing either misunderstanding or mockery. Jesus responds that knowing Him means knowing the Father, asserting their inseparable unity and the crowd's ignorance of both.
The question may contain a veiled insult about Jesus' parentage. Jesus' response elevates the discussion to its highest theological level: the mutual knowledge of Father and Son is indivisible.
The Pharisees demand to see Jesus' supposed second witness, and Jesus responds by revealing the depth of their spiritual ignorance.
They ask where the Father is, perhaps sarcastically. Jesus' answer is devastating: you do not know Me or My Father. If you did, you would recognize the Father's witness in everything I do.
17Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
18I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father, who sent Me, also testifies about Me.”
19“Where is Your Father?” they asked Him.
20He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come.
21Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
