Jesus makes another stunning declaration: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness. He is not just a teacher. He is the source of all light.

The temple was lit up with huge lamps during the feast. Jesus uses that imagery to say: I am what those lights point to. I am the real light.

The scholarly reading

Jesus declares the second great egō eimi: egō eimi to phōs tou kosmou (I am the light of the world), promising that whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness (skotia) but have the light (phōs) of life.

Language and setting

During Sukkot, four enormous golden menorahs illuminated the Court of Women. Jesus' declaration appropriates this festival imagery, claiming to be the ultimate light the ceremony anticipated, echoing Isaiah 9:2 and 42:6.

Voice

Jesus makes a second major I AM declaration in the temple, claiming to fulfill the Feast of Tabernacles' light symbolism.

Significance

Against the backdrop of the great temple lamps, Jesus claims to be the light of the entire world. Every candle, every lamp, every menorah was a shadow of what He is: the light that darkness cannot overcome.
