The section concludes with each person departing to his own home (eis ton oikon autou), a brief narrative dissolution suggesting the council's inability to reach consensus and the unresolved tension surrounding Jesus.

This verse originally concluded the Tabernacles narrative before the Pericope Adulterae (7:53-8:11) was inserted. The dispersal emphasizes that the authorities have failed to act against Jesus or answer His claims.
