What It Means

John 7:23, in plain English

Jesus drives the point home: if you can circumcise on the Sabbath without guilt, why are you furious at Him for healing an entire person on the Sabbath? The logic is undeniable.

The scholarly reading

Jesus completes the kal va-chomer (lesser to greater) argument: if circumcision of one member is permitted on the Sabbath to avoid breaking Moses' law, anger at making a whole person (holon anthrōpon) well on the Sabbath is unjustified.

Language and setting

This argument follows established rabbinic hermeneutical principles (middot), using the leaders' own interpretive methods against them. The contrast between circumcision (one body part) and complete healing (the whole person) is devastating.

Voice

Jesus presses His logical argument to its conclusion, exposing the irrationality of condemning His Sabbath healing.

Significance

The argument is irrefutable. If a ritual procedure on one body part is acceptable on the Sabbath, then healing an entire human being must be even more so. Jesus beats the rabbis at their own game.

22But because Moses gave you circumcision, you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
