The scholarly reading

Jesus pivots to offense, asserting that Moses gave the Law yet none of them keep (poiei) it, then pointedly asks why they seek to kill (apokteinai) Him, exposing their hypocrisy.

Language and setting

The accusation that they do not keep the Law while claiming to defend it is a devastating rhetorical move. Their plot to kill Jesus actually violates the very Law they claim to uphold.
