The religious leaders are amazed by Jesus' teaching but cannot figure out how He knows so much without any formal education. His wisdom does not fit their categories.
In their world, you had to study under a famous rabbi to teach with authority. Jesus never did, and yet His teaching surpasses all of theirs.
The Jewish leaders express their astonishment, unable to explain where Jesus' knowledge comes from.
God does not need human credentials to accomplish His purposes. Jesus' wisdom came from the Father, not from a seminary. That drove the religious establishment crazy.
The Jewish leaders express amazement (ethaumazon) at Jesus' learning (grammata), questioning how He attained such knowledge without formal rabbinic training (mē memathēkōs), revealing their bias toward credentialed education.
The verb manthanō in its perfect form (memathēkōs) refers to formal study under a recognized rabbi. Jesus' lack of such credentials challenged the authority structure of Second Temple Judaism.
The Jewish leaders respond to Jesus' teaching with astonishment, questioning the source of His learning since He lacked formal rabbinic education.
Jesus' teaching is so profound that the religious authorities cannot deny its quality, yet they stumble over His lack of credentials. The tension between divine authority and human credentialing systems comes to the fore.

16“My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied. “It comes from Him who sent Me.
17If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own.
