The scholarly reading

The crowd's response is divided: some call Jesus agathos (good/morally upright), while others accuse Him of planaō (leading astray/deceiving) the people, reflecting an irreducible division in public opinion.

Language and setting

The verb planaō (to lead astray) is a serious charge in Jewish law, carrying the death penalty for a false prophet who leads Israel into error (Deuteronomy 13:1-5).
