The scholarly reading

The narrative records a mass apostasia: many disciples (polloi ek tōn mathētōn) permanently withdrew (apēlthon eis ta opisō) and no longer walked (peripatein) with Him, marking a decisive turning point in His ministry.

Language and setting

The phrase eis ta opisō (turned back) echoes the language of apostasy in the Old Testament. This mass departure fulfills the discourse's warnings about unbelief and reduces Jesus' following dramatically.

Significance

The Bread of Life discourse has its cost. Many who had followed Jesus walk away for good. His refusal to soften His message or court popularity results in the dramatic thinning of His movement.
