The scholarly reading

Jesus poses a provocative conditional: if the Bread of Life discourse offends them, what will they make of the Son of Man ascending (anabainonta) to where He was before, referencing both the ascension and His pre-existence?

Language and setting

The question is deliberately ambiguous: will the ascension increase their offense or resolve it? The anabasis (ascent) completes the katabasis (descent) motif, confirming Jesus' heavenly origin.
